Hey Human Doing!
Remember we are also Human Beings?
How do you introduce yourself at a dinner party?
Typically, by the roles we play in society or the work we perform. A parent, a VP of something, a teacher… the Doing-based list goes on.
I call that our “Human DOING”.
Now, how would close friends describe you at your funeral?
Typically, by the personality or the impact you’ve left behind. Quirky, stubborn, but dedicated to her kids… Lights up any room like a chandelier… that list goes on too.
I call that our “Human BEING”.
What I’ve learned so far, is that my truest nature, my humanity, is at its most potent and vivacious state when my “human Doing” is in harmony and balance with my “human Being”.
But far too often, I find myself and others describe ourselves purely by the value and services that we perform and offer, and discount the intrinsic values of our beings until when someone else reads our eulogy.
If we wish to be seen, to be heard, to relate as humans and remind ourselves the humanity that we share, then we ought to stop describing ourselves and one another purely as the roles and functions we play, but also as the humans that we be.
So, question: The next time you introduce yourself, what’s one thing about your being that you want the other person to connect with?
